raw frustration
3 rough-edged pieces of raw unprimed canvas
mounted and painted on commercial canvas
then removed from the mounts
swirls and shapes and angry colours
painted with ferocious energy
now hang limply over a rail
what next?
each piece is about 70cm squarish, originally mounted on 80cm sq canvas
I could re stretch and remount
I could paint over them
I could burn them
any thoughts?
BIG HUGE framed
dribbling
My daughter thinks that dribbles in paintings are lazy
Some people think dribbles are simply gross
I think that dribbles are part of an organic, unpredictable way of making abstract work
I find dribbles in the work that I make, inspired by the rain and the clouds and the wetlands of rural Ireland, are appropriate
But what do you think?
And heres a famous ‘dribbler’:
Joan Mitchell
one of a pair soon to go

2 paintings 80cm square
these have served me well over the last 2 years
there were 10 in the series
2 orange, 2 orange and blue (these ones)
2 blue, 2 green
2 pink and turquoise
they were inspired by the spiky sharp marram grass
that curves over the sandy paths round the shore
the orange ones are in Birmingham, England
a present for a 60th birthday
a blue one hangs in a cafe in Dundrum, County Down in Northern Ireland
a green one has gone to a friends holiday cottage
a pink and turquoise one was sold this summer, off to an unknown destination
they have served me well, featuring in 4 group shows
one of these two will be chosen to go to a new home tomorrow
good friends, heading off to their new separate homes2
HUGE 5

another session at the canvases today
added more oil paint with siccative, oil paint with safflower oil, oil bars and graphite pencil
the painting is taking on a more landscapy feel
softer and more subdued
HUGE is on its way, stage 1 and 2
sublime or ridiculous (sofa level view in orange)
above me
beside me
definitely ridiculous
a beautiful gallery-type wall, protected by plywood to protect against puncturing the pipes
when they fitted the plywood, they punctured the pipes!
I am now patiently watching the wall drying out waiting for it to be replastered after 2 years of leaking
happy sofa musings
